Today my mare Molly passed to spirit, she was thirty eight years old a good age. Molly and I were together for twenty seven years it is hard to imagine life without her. She taught many people to ride and was still a lovely ride for those more experienced and she bred some beautiful foals. Even though she lost most of her teeth a good few years ago she remained strong and plump on short feed. Each day she loved to gallop and yesterday was no exception, but today a mild colic became something more sinister and we decided the kindest thing was to ease her passing.

The vet, new to our practice was one of the kindest most enlightened vets I have met in a long time. She dropped her so gently to the ground and removed her head collar before leaving us to say our good byes. I know it may seem silly but I feel my horses came into this world free of restraints and that is he way I like them to leave as free spirits.

After her passing we brought each of her three children into the arena to say good bye. Sarah was Molly’s last foal and the two have been inseparable for the last fifteen years. I led Sarah into the arena and unclipped her lead rope, she walked across to her mom and gently touched her face in several places. She then turned and walked towards me she looked calm and strong and I felt her say ‘I will not look back’ Sarah is strong but I know she grieves deeply inside.

Sher Khan her son asked me to walk with him but he was calm when he touched his mom. He was the one who brought tears to my eyes his expression was one of deep, deep sadness, gentleness and love. As he gently touched her he made me want to weep. Later he asked to spend more time with her and stood guard over her body occasionally adjusting the blanket she was covered with. I noticed him taking deep breaths as he inhaled her scent it felt as though he was trying to imprint her scent on his memory forever. He lay next to her until they came to collect the body and then when I asked him he walked quietly away with me.

Rusty her adopted son showered kiss after kiss on her face he did not want to leave her. None of the other horses, even those that have known her for many years, would go near her body. Such is the bond of love between her and her children, they had no fear.

I spent the afternoon with the horses we did not need words we had one another. We had lots of different people coming and going for various reasons. Everyone, even the non horsy ones, was touched by the love and devotion of her children. I know that people on this list have love and respect for horses. But these people were awed by the horses and I feel they have gone away with a new and better perspective. The horses were able to reach out and touch them as no other human could.

I feel so humble and yet so honoured to know such horses.

Eileen

Thank you. Eileen.

A sweet and gentle passing and a loving farewell.

Thinking of you as you reflect and celebrate the life of your wonderful friend, the joys you shared and the grief at being parted.

oh Eileen, I picture it and cry with you all.

A shame, I almost got to know Molly live, now I shall get to know her by her children and the imprint she left on all of you.

Lots of love and strength I send to all of you,

Josepha

Donald, Susie, Glen and Josepha it was a pleasure to share this with you.

It was a gentle passing Donald and I would hope that when my time comes it will be as gentle.

I would have liked you to meet Molly Josepha but you will meet her children and I think you will like them. Perhaps we can tempt Susie to come along also. Donald and Glen if ever you come to the UK you know were to find me. it would be nice to have one of those transporters they use in Star Trek.

Eileen,

It is always difficult to let go of someone dear.
But there is a good way and there are other ways...
I am sure Molly got the best way possible, and so did her kids.
I wish you all the nice memories together will relief the pain of the loss.

Thank you for sharing this experience. :f:

Dear Eileen,

Thank you for sharing this beautiful experience. Saying farewell must be so difficult but the way you describe it the peace that was makes it beautiful and serene at the same time. I send you a lot of strength in times you miss her and hope some day you think about her and feel no tears for missing her, only joy that Molly has been in your life.

a big hug

Bianca
