Spain is poised to grant legal protection for great apes!
I heard this on a radio show about the Law and Animals, and looked it up on Google. Wow! Go Spain!

Francisco Garrido of the Green Party, a bioethicist and deputy for Seville, has presented a proposal to the Spanish parliament ("Proposicion No de Ley" is the technical term) to obtain a commitment from the Spanish government to grant chimpanzees, gorillas, orang-utans, and bonobos protection against "slavery, torture, death, and extinction" and to grant them recognition in their own right as "persons".

Although it is great apes now, it a step in the direction of seeing animals as more than property and appently means that animal cruelty cases (for apes anyway) will be able to heard under their own name.

My heart bleeds so often for horses who are (mis)treated as someone's property.
