Did you also play that as a child? Here's a video of a little test for your horses:
http://www.wege-zum-pferd.de/img/videos/apfelspiel.php

It's in German, but pretty self explaining. The test setup is simple: fill a bucket with water, then place an apple in the water with your horse watching it. Sit back and see how they go about getting to that apple.
There are four different approaches in the video, with the winner being (of course!) the pony! Gets that apple in two seconds flat :funny:

I have to try that today ;)

Titum does exactly the same like the pony: pressing the apple to the ground of zje water trough and in that way getting hold of it within seconds. I still have to find a way to explain it to Summy that he needn't give up too fast, and then Pia is playing the intellectual child again: last time we tried it she fished the apple out, bit off a piece on the ground and then put it back into the water trough to try again. :funny:

Thanks for posting the video, what a great reminder for me! I have promised the children to do this for several weekends now, but then alsways forgot to buy apples. Hopefully I remember this time.

I did this with Falco once. He had excactly the same tactic as the pony in the end had: pressing it down to the bottom of the bucket in order to be able to grab it and pull it out. Must do it again and include JaldiƱa in this. Curious to see how she would approach it.

Yesterday I did it with Mucki. The result was... well... strange, to say the least ;) Not that he didn't get the apple in the end - it took him almost 6 minutes though. And in the end he got himself into a fit of frustration, play, or was it his prblem solving strategy? I'm still not entirely sure, but see for yourself:

Ha ha that is soooo funny :funny:
I am now off to buy a bag of apples and try this out on all the horses. I suspect though that most of them will just tip over the bucket as they do to get the last of the food when they can't reach it because they are tied. Will be interesting to see if they transfer that skill to the water ;)

Would be great to have videos of the different strategies.

The bucket I used is quite tricky to topple over if filled with enough water, as it is so flexible. Pushing doesn't help so much here. If you want a challenge, use a fexible food bucket instead of a standard water bucket ;)

I'll attempt to film this game with both of the horses later today! :)

It was clear that the brilliant Mucki knew that by splashing enough water out, the level would drop and he could get the apple by pushing it to the bottom without getting water up his nose. His persistence was mesmerizing. :ieks: :applause:
