The scene is hotting up here - Madrid - and now Valencia - wish to declare bullfighting part of the "Cultural Heritage", which would make it very much more difficult to halt and clear the way for public subsidies - I'll keep developments posted....
In some cultures it's acceptable to kill others that offend one in certain ways. That doesn't make me want to either permit or encourage.
Torture is acceptable in some cultures.
Calling brutality and torture of animals a "Cultural Heritage," is denial.
I ask those that make such a claim if they are animal torturers. If they say "no," then I ask if they know how to kill a bull over a half hour or so of play with him, carrying around hooked darts in his shoulders with out him feeling pain. If that doesn't do it, I ask them why they don't simply bring the bull in and kill it humanely with a bullet to the brain. If all they want is a ritual death they could certainly arrange for some kind of pagentry leading up to the gun shot.
Maybe even fete the bull in some way. Some nice grain to eat, an in-season cow to service ... why not make it even bigger than it already is with all the torture. Celebrate the joy of life before death.
I have to imagine a people doing bullfights as they do that are not joyful themselves and thus worship death as an escape from life rather than just the end of the joyride.
Sad, isn't it?
