Hey, that's interesting! Wasn't she there last year too? I then hoped that she would bring her horses to show dressage at liberty, but when I saw pictures later it turned out that it was really a clinic with only participant training their horses and that all was done on-line. But I'd love to know more about it, so if someone over here feels like going there, please post a report! |

Oh, it looks like an interesting event, Karen (and Lauren La Rue, the vet/cowgirl poet sounds like a total hoot -- trust Leigh to zone in on the frivolous immediately...)... It is pretty close -- about an hour/hour and a half away from me and the Santa Ynez valley is just gorgeous...I'm going to have to think if I can afford it! (I'm also working through where the balance of my curiosity lands and where my sense of frustration about the "ultimate in light hands" (as one quote said) still all having bits in mouths...) I recognize this is my stuff as much as theirs -- part of it is my frustration with trying to find dressage trainers in my area who are willing to even consider training without bits -- or even be helpful to me as I'm working through exploring how to do it...though it looks like Ensign works without bits some of the time... But it looks like an intriguing bunch! So I'll give you a definite maybe... xoxo Leigh |

Oh, man, I'd love to go to this! Sue McDonnell has done really cutting edge research on horse cognition (and some on horses dreaming and REM) and New Bolton is an amazing place. (Spent some time there when a buddy was going to vet school at Penn some years ago.) I wonder if I can get back there this fall...but sheesh, it ain't cheap! I think I need to rob a bank!!! Longing, longing, longing...thanks, Rita! Leigh |

Wow, this is very close for me and very intersting- but yes, very expensive!!! I'm not sure how far New Bolten actually is since everytime my husband goes there he has a sick horse on the trailer and is going 80+ miles per hour to get it there. He keeps saying if the cops follow him that's fine but they have to wait until he gets to New Bolten before he'll pull over. I wonder how good it will really be- Is it just to create awareness that it amy be something physical, or is it really indepth on finding the cause of the problem?? Since my husband works "problem horses" we have seen many with lots of physical (but appears to be emotional) issues- bad teeth, poor saddle fit, bad back. One horse was narcoleptic!!!! (yup, horses can get narcolepsy- mare would just fall over!) SO I wonder if this clinic would really help us in getting more tuned in, or cover what we already know??? |

Boy, I don't know, Danee -- It sounds like it's for pro's, not backyard horse owners, so maybe it's worth calling and asking? I've been really intrigued with Sue McDonnell and the research she's been doing. If you do go, I'd love a full report! Leigh |

Obama, my new Saddlechariot pony, will be demonstrating his ability to control people without the use of bits or whips at the Whole Horse Weekend http://www.futurewebz.co.uk/emwuk.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=270&Itemid=1. The crafty little creep persuades everyone he is nice innocent and cuddly, but since he has taken me, my saddlechariot and camping trailer from Brecon to Birmingham (thirteen days on the road if you take my relaxed attitude to geography) I can't complain. Driving that distance along B roads, through City centres, on canal towpaths and through the forest of Dean teaches you a lot about your pony and more about yourself. It also shows that if i can do that distance with a six year old rescue pony which I started training in January, that whips are unneccessary for at least 99% of equestrian activities. To see how i work and see a wide range of trainers who actually know what they are doing, come along to the Whole Horse Weekend at Rowanoak, Nick Sander's Brecon yard. Simon |
