That makes me feel better. I go through an amazing amount of treats in a session too. I think what I am using is a hay stretcher as well...although they are called "crunches" or "Krunches" here. The company was kind enugh to send me an ingredient list and answer my questions about sugar. They said they were low in sugars.

So far, in a year of working with the clicker and all these treats, I haven't had any detrimental effects on the horses.

I also give balck oil sunfower seeds as a treat with their grain. They only get grain after we work with them, so it's not something they get every day. The love the sunflower seeds. When I first heard about them, I thought, "...no way...sunflower seeds???". But wow...there's not a horse here that will turn thier noses up if they are offered. And I love the sound of crunching when they eat them.

Thanks Brenda, and Karen...
Do you know who makes these Krunchers?
What brand of hay stretcher? I was using alfalfa cubes, but that isn't great either. For a special goodie I give him carrots, cut up small pieces so that they will last a bit. I know the sugar is up there in carrots, but it isn't as high as the other treats that have oats in them. I also will give him some of his chow. I have him on the Safe Choice by Nutrena.

There was a company that sells the low G I treats, well the mix, you bake em yourself but it was 15dollars to make a half pound batch.
That will not go over well with hubby.

the horses like the sunflower seeds?

Thanks again for the info., I am trying to find a bit of variety for the baby Huey.

Hi all,

Here's a fun video I made of Lucy and me working with her Tiger. I saved it in slow motion to make seeing her movements better, especialy the lead change. I didn't even notice it when I watched it in real time!

She is really lovin' this Tiger work!!!!! And I am loving the energy I am getting from such a big girl!!! Now even when I work her with the 'tame' target, she is using her body very differently and much more expressive!

Enjoy!

Brenda

Hi Brenda:

You look like you're having so much fun! These are great things that I can teach my horses.

Thanks and continue to have fun (and show us of course).
:D

Great video.

Whom was having more fun I wonder? It was really helpful to see the movement slowed down. Thanks Brenda.

Kim.

it looks great, and indeed, slowing down the video was a great idea...

Brenda! Wonderful tiger hunt! Thanks for sharing.
I'm wondering, was the spinning buck cued or spontaneous. It was fabulous.

Hi Sue,

Yes! Tiger hunting!!!

Not cued really, just when I snatch the Tiger around 180 degrees and/or slap it on the ground, she is very stimulated and is very expressive so often bucks. So I just see what she gives me and try to click things I like, mostly using her rear end....I guess bucking falls into that category...?? <G>.

Mostly I am trying to stimulate, then capture movement, click/treat!!! So eventually maybe I will have some moves on cue. I am working on getting her to canter in a spin on her rear?? Pirouette???

I am definitely going to try to replicate the flying lead change...we'll see! More to come!

Thanks for watching!

Brenda

Thanks Brenda. I really like the precision that you are working with. I'm inspired to get out and play.
I do small circles, but without tiger. And we do free chase the tiger.. but I haven't put the two together yet. I've been waiting for a clearer picture of how I want to do it.. I think it's coming! :D

Thanks to everyone for watching the Lucy clip and giving feedback!

And I am so glad you enjoyed the slow motion! I hope others will try the same with their videos cuz I am finding we can see so much more about what's happening and how the horse is moving that way!!!

Brenda

Hi Sue,

I think you can get much clearer direction out of a play session with a target or Tiger, and so stimulate more repeatable behaviors so that I can build a reinforcement history and then someday get it on cue.

Anyway, keep us posted on what you try and how it goes! I'm still experimenting too!

Videos! Videos!

Brenda

YES! I have just gone back to the beginning of target training again to set the basics properly, because I"ve come to this conclusion myself. :D
Your vid was very timely for me.
