Hi Suzy,

Thanks for the links, I use ground poles to mark out a square and send the horses round the outside very similar to what Hannah does.

It is a really good idea for the two stallions because they circle closer and closer until they almost brush against me  I thought it was a really nice and polite way of askng them to respect my space and I think it helps them balance because they are guided by the position of the poles.

Ground poles, what a good idea!
I did think Hannah's concept was great but neither of my horses would respect an electric tape even if I put a battery to it, and with it electrified it would defeat the point of the exercise, stealing the sheep hurdles would get me into trouble, so defining with ground poles, yes, I can see how that is worth a try, thanks.xx

I also use something to mark the inner side of the circle, but I don't like poles for it. I ruptured a tendon myself by stepping sideways on something like a pole and if the horses are not fully balanced yet they are bound to fall into the circle and step on the barrier.
Here in Austria and Germany there's something called "Dualgassen" which became rather popular a while ago. It's basically foam strips with a tarp cover around it.
Looks like that.
It's soft but still robust and very light to carry around ;). I can really recommend something like it. You can just cut it from foam yourself I guess...

Dualgassen sounds like a good idea but my guys would tear it to pieces :funny: cones they pick up and throw about, tape they run through, I guess they are hooligans

Seriously though if you start your horses in walk and click for stretching forward and balance before moving into trot then ground poles pose no threat . It is easy enough to shape them to work one or two feet away from the poles mine work quite wide of the square. I also make my square slightly smaller than picadero size as I prefer to work a square with rounded corners rather than a circle.

Nice video's.
the poles can be handy when you will learn your horse for the first time to circle around you.
Specialy when they are to sticky with you ;)

i go and try it soon for my dog, i will teach her left and right, she know it while we are riding.
i say each time when we go left or right i use the command, but i will put it on a sound command just as they do it by sheepdogs. So i had already thought about it and this is a very easy way for her to understand what i wanted. I dont want to train it while i am out with the pony's before it goes perfect.
The help form the poles make it more easy for her i hope...
