Ralph just edited his first movie with the software recommended by Bianca.

It was just a 'free lunge session' at the end of the fall... nothing fancy.

O-Master is back!

Note; The music sort of happened to be on when Ralph watched the movie and he found that it fitted exellent ha ha !

Hope you enjoy :)

What a nice video! The music sure fits Owen, it is very energetic and macho :D

I was wondering if you were using the Voest freestyle method to learn Owen this? Ofcourse what we see here is an AND version of freestyling
But how did you both learn it?

I find that Donanta does not like being there on the circel and reacts very irritated to the rope 'driving' her. But maybe that is just me having to much energy coming out of my bellybutton :( My guess is that I have to slow things way down and reward more like I do now with CT.

How do you see this?

Hi Marleen and thank you!

I have not followed any courses from Emiel Voest so I do not know how he works actually but :) ...:

Years ago, I think 7, I was at a Horse Event in Holland and I saw Emiel Voest 'freestyle' a horse.
The thing I picked up there was (to my astonishement) how one can have the horse focus on certain moves of your body, just by holding a rope!

So, I hold the rope in my hands and then I make movements with my arms to indicate the rythm, tempo and direction.

But, I do not drive Owen with my rope!

How did I teach him... good question, I did not, Owen just likes to move and he likes to move close to me or around me, so it is very simple.
(allthough I have to say, when someone else tries it, Owen does not oblige...)

With horses like Donanta or Ino who do not like to move (on command or question) I would not swing a rope at them. Of course, you can try ones, but if it does not work, well, it will not work the second time.

So I suggest you play chase the tiger with Donanta, and I will do it with Ino :)(and have it filmed!)

And last, I like to have a rope in my hand, just in case. When horses spook or get agressive or to playful and your body is getting sort of in the way, you can use the rope to define your space to hang on to dear life so to speak ha ha !

I hope this will help you :)

Warm regards,

Josepha

There is this tiny piece were you see Owen really collect when he passes Jamie.
Owen fancying himself the hight of cool, you see it!

I wonder who of you picks that up (if you have time to watch this movie for there are soooo much more exciting movies here of course).

Ralph and I came to sort of a conclusion regarding collection.

I wonder what you think...

Yes it helps, thanks!

I am also in favour of chasing the tiger. Although with Donanta it quickly turns into 'killing the tiger' I have a new videocamera and I filmed it. Maybe I will post the video here too, but I am not sure if I have the guts for it.

There is so much that goes wrong. All kind of misunderstandings between her and me, and she looked so surprised when I walked out of the paddock once, because she got to 'agressive' towards the tiger and almost hit me! I smacked her with the tiger on her chest, it was a instinctive reaction, now I sure regret that :(
I really know that I caused that myself by missing a thousand small signals and by poking up the fire to much...... but to show that to the world, I have to gain some serious courage for that  :(

Please don't worry, Marleen. We all make a lot of mistakes and we know that, so no one will be angry with you. ;) I'd love to see your video!

I guess taking the risc (feeling so ashamed) is worth it, when I can get good feedback from you guys!

@ Marleen, just load it up to youtube. Don't worry!
You do not need to be perfect! I make so much mistakes all the time. We are only humans... we can not be as perfect as horses ;)

I think that this is 'your problem' you have such high expectations of yourself and what for? Just have fun with your horses! It is not like you earn a living by training them or loose something valuable when they do not piaffe in 1 year. ;)
Loosen up, have fun!

@ the other girls... well how about O-master first video clip? is he not a star? :) 8)

Wheeehew!

He seems to have found his canter/trot again! He still seems to be a bit stiff in the hindlegs (especially when he runs to the left), but you can see that in his mind he is really relaxed and just enjoying the run. It must be wonderful to see again for you!

By the way, it's so funny when I look at his legs in trot: when you see a video of a driving car, sometimes the wheels seem to spin backwards because of the framerate of the movie. On my computer it's the same with Owen! I can see that he is moving forwards, but when looking at his legs they seem to actually be moving backwards. Very funny!

Owen of course looks stunning. He is so well put together and he is a very good weight right now. I do not know enough to comment on how he is moving, other than to say he looks happy in himself and relaxed and ready for so much more!

I also like the music very much!

Here is the video from last Sunday (not yesterday).
A very tired and some what distraught Owen.
You can see his still filled feeding trug in the left corner.
Now and than he takes a bite of his lunch (that's when he's out of the picture on the left several times...

At some points he wants to do some other things instead of chase the tiger so I use the other side of the tiger as a whip...
But then he notices himself that he is to tired for gymnastics so we continue with the tiger.
One very short trot is all he could master..
But it made him feel better for sure!

The beauty of AND is that you can never harm your horse... afterall, he sets the rules :)

a sunday afternoon

I loved the moment where after staring in the distance for a while (very well parked still within the range of the camera, he sure isn't camera-shy! ), he then reconnects with you and gently comes along and plays with you again. Nice to see!

What suprised me too is that Owen is starting to use his body better more and more: he is offering a lot of very tight turns in order to follow you when you walk from his head to his side, which is a good sign in a horse with a past of pelvic injuries. He still doesn't know how to really do a good turn around the frontquarters (crossing his hindlegs in front of each other, instead of placing them behind the body), but I think that very soon he might be ready for some very easy bending/sideways movements, starting with turns around the frontquarters and turns around the hindquarters. Well, the first weeks only a few steps of course and not an entire turn, but he seems to be getting more ready to start at that as he shows you he can turn tighter again and is quite eager to do so. Great to see!

Well the riding is easy for me ha ha !

The groudwork is just as new to me than to most of you here.

I told Owen he could rear now, and he goes up when my hand goes up, and I wanted to get that irritating hair out of my face and he saw that is the cue, sweet huh? ha ha ha !
Oh, I love him sooooo.... He takes my breath away.

(Ralph said, if I die you can marry this friend of his, I said no, I'll marry Owen)

The second time when he goes up, I did not ask, but in slowmotion you see my gleaming face when he does it... a huge smile... ahum.
Caught in the act, Ralph says.
It was Ralph's idea to work in the casseson.

He says playing time is over and we need to train more seriously as we have to give a demo april 17 and people need to see different excersizes and not just Owen and my jumping crazy around high on adrenaline... maybe he has a point... Ralph has.

Beautiful! So very soft and giving (both of you!).

And I watched your trotting under saddle over and over... I couldn't get over how relaxed and swinging Owen's back and pelvis were!

Thank you! :D

I am confident that Owen can show a piaffe without bridle or spurs this summer... carrying his co-alpha, ha ha! : me :) ( really dig that idea... wow)
Hopefully when Ania comes filmig, would that not be nice?
I say to Owen, after we've done this and all is documenten well, we can retire ha ha ! He then nickers, honestly. Like he is laughing softly.

Most horses start trot really fine when without rider.
The problem is the riders seat.

You have to learn (and it is actually quite easy) to keep (as I call it) your seat 'light' and 'open at the front'.
A voila: magic gaits :)

Thinking of Bruce Lee who states 'the art of fighting without fighting' I also call it: 'the Art of sitting without sitting' :)
Or as Master Lee also states: 'Be like water, my friend'....

:)
My pupils thank me ... a lot ha ha !!!
And I always say: why did no one ever explain to me?

None of this  stuff, now! I hope you realise that when you're here (did you get the e-mail I sent, BTW?) you're going to have to teach me seat lessons, and bitless lessons, and cordeo lessons, and help me how to work more effective with Freckles, and help him how to work more effective with his body, and, and, AND!

I don't think there'll be time for you to work with anyone else!

Josepha, Owen looks well and happy after all your concern. I do hope he maintains his health. He is such a Good Boy, no mugging and he halts nicely.
I definately need you to pop in next year, Eileen must still be moving as I have heard nothing yet for dates etc.
Lovely video of happy human and happy horse.

Thanks Susie :)
He thought it out so, it was all his idea, he was in charge as you all can see :)
Interesting is my body language, when I bend my core away from him he takes longer to stop, then when I aim my core at him. I only just saw that on film, good idea, filming :green:

Well, there is still time, don't worry, the UK clinic will happen for sure :)

I am very happy seeing you both being happy again! :thumleft:

Just a question:
You run and ask him to follow; he comes running to you while you are facing him.
But to make him stop you first put your hand out in front and than above your head.
Why the move above your head?

Hi Annemarie :) Thank you!

I am just experimenting with this as much as he is. I think keeping my arms in front of me is to compensate the fact that I keep asking him 'in' with my core.
Now when I spread my arms in the air I make myself large and 'point my core' which seems to work perfectly (and I can make Mr. Irwin proud as I did listened to him, a lot :) )

So thanks to Romy who hinted me an a video-maker which even works for the likes of me (Thanks Romy and would you believe, this program was standard on my laptop!?)
I was able to do a first attempt at a sort of instruction video for our academy TAONARA.
When I have time, more to come!

I have now subscribed to Taonara TV, so this is lovely to look forward to.
Owen is funny, he gets too excited.
Good quality video, and you both look well and happy, (and have an arena with no mud.)
 :applause:

I barely have time for training, writing or this forum... but just to let you know how Ino and Owen are doing:

I forgot to say, apart from it being a funny video. It is an exellent video to study all the dressage movements.
I am writing down all the movement I see to place with the video.

But what is really, really interesting (Or so I think) is after 4,00 minutes, where Owen is done (out of breath) and Ino just wants to go on. They was Owen handles it, watch it closely it is so interesting to use yourself when calming down a horse!
He ignores Ino, and goes out of his way and at the same time he oozes calmness, which Ino absorbed after which Owen takes Ino along by the shoulder and Ino copies again… marvellous stuff. Or so I think anyway… :D

Hehe.. :green: I like how Owen turns his butt to Ino those first few seconds after he's done playing when Ino is still running around. It's like he flatly saying "Nope. Done."

So I've seen:

circles in walk trot and canter
shoulder in
serpentines
yielding
turns around the quarters
turns around the forehand
many transitions, some with very collected departure
levade
pesade

did I forget anything?

Oh, I would love to see that video (but I can't, due to youtube's strange copyright restrictions for Germany). Maybe I can watch it when I am visiting you.

I was thinking about how well Owen handles a bit of an overexcited Ino by doing... well what seems to be not so much. But his whole expression is so clam, and when Ino is again more relaxed he walks of with him again :)

I wish we could all work with horses the way Owen does there

I want to come to the meeting, depends on then when and where... still a bit chaotic with coming home after holiday and big changes... so I have not yet brought myself up to date on the whereabouts of the meeting :)

and I really liked it

I'm working on spanish walk with Ruphina as well now (we can do it with only the left foot now so it is more of a spanish skip right now ;) ) so maybe this is an idea for us as well...

That is why I showed the video! Lot's of horses find it so difficult somehow.
O just thought he could not do it. He thought that he would fall or something if he spanish walked instead of simply stood and jambette-ed like a begging dog ha ha !
But the ball helps him to focus and streamline the movement. And I now finally have an O who can wait for me to cue and keep distance to actually see what I am asking :) yippie! In stead of running into me, pawing me and everything like crazy! ha ha !

This is such a different Owen than the one I met last time, so calm and polite! :) :thumleft:
Veeery nice, and I love the idea of using a ball to train the Spanish walk - so nice when he lifts two legs in a row! :)

And Wow, eighteen, you really wouldn't say if you see the video, congratulations!
Now where did I leave that cake... 8)

Thank you Karen and Visebre :)

As always, it was Owen's idea. I saw him doing jambette against the ball and then walking after it and I thought: hey! :ieks: Wait a minute! ha ha ! Duh, why couldn't I think of that?
Because we are working on this he is getting so loose and balanced! it is such a great Gymnasium exercise.

@Miriam, thank you! I can't tell you what a relieve it is to finally feel safe enough around him. I know he would not want to hurt me in a million years. But he always got so excited and had no control over himself. I have been rewarding for a year for just standing, waiting and taking distance! Now finally he has self control and patience.
And one of his own findings is turning away from me so he can retain himself again. Because he is so extremely intelligent and used to bossing everybody around, he is the most difficult horse for me to work with somehow. But I enjoy it the most  He seems always so interested in what I am thinking or feeling. I never experienced that with any one else before.

Also Romy showed us how we got each other worked up. It is crazy and I do not have that problem with any other horse. With other horses I simply adjust the energy level to what is needed. But with O somehow, we got each other so worked up. Now, if I feel his energy levels rise, I do not go a long with it but meditate on slow breathing. It helps so much. Sometimes he even starts breathing loud and long too ha ha !

Make it a carrot cake for O, he likes carrots the most :)

Thank you Karen :) slowly we are getting somewhere.

The hardest part was for O not to turn towards me or walk away :)
That is where Monsieur De Pluvinel used the pilars for of course... 8) So this way takes a wee bit longer, say like 6 months ha ha !

This is like similar situations at the stable, when I have told the kids that sometimes you have to reward the horse for NOT doing the wrong thing before you get the chance to reward them for doing the right thing! :applause:

Nice Josepha!

I'm working on this with Sunrise at the moment, and unless she's standing in an actual "goat" position, it's hard to 1: get her to stand with her feet square, and 2: not move her feet when she transfers weight back. Karen, so true what you say. I'm making progress when I reward more quickly, when I don't wait for the right thing, but mark that she hasn't started doing the wrong thing yet. There are some beautiful words in Bill Dorrance's big book where he talks about IMAGINING that the horse is doing the right thing as a way to help them out, if they just can't quite get to doing the right thing yet. It seems to so reverberate with CT and with AND.

I'm impressed with where you've got to with Owen. There's a really clear transferal of weight backwards.

Thank you Sue :)
Well, I worked on halt really for a very looooong time. Since December in fact. Halt is probably one of the most important exercises and at the same time the one most overlooked (by me anyway ha ha !).
Correct halt has cured most of our 'problems'.

I never use goat on the mountain. For me this exercise puts the front legs towards the point of gravity which I do not want to aspire or make a habit of in any way.

Now the next step to this video would be to bend the hocks, for that the abdominal muscles need to do their thing. So, I shall proceed by asking Owen to back and then from back go into walk and when he can do that, trot. The next vid will probably be in december :funny:

Nice to see you back on your horse! The Espaniola saddle looks good on him! And he seems very happy about you mounting. I guess that means he's giving it the thumbs up? What do you think of it compared to the Barefoots? Is it the short flap or the long flap model? (Sorry, lots of saddle questions.. I'm looking at buying a discounted one at the moment!)

O is looking lovely and bendy with his lateral flexions. I often train this without the hand cue as well, keeping my body tall and upright so that I don't lean to lure to me, and just turning my body from the hips very slightly as I would when riding a bend, and wait for my horses to get it. Then put my hand down with the treat. This still gives the benefit of the lateral flexion, but adds an extra polish up of tuning them to my seat and leg cues so I can ride tackless. It makes a really "wow" inspiring trick too when you get people to name left or right for you and your horse does it with seemingly no cue! :funny:

I admit I spent quite alot of time drooling over the saddle. 8) :D

And now I'll be working on our "halt" alittle more too. ;)

Question though...
With flexions what do you do in the case of having a horse like Diego who can't even reach up that far to take a treat from me while mounted? He also tilts his head alot, like Karen mentioned on my videos (uneven ears). I notice even while bending around Owen keeps his ears nice and level.

Nice to see you back on your horse!

Thank you, oh you can’t believe how happy I am finally to be able to work like that again! Aah! I never knew I missed it so much, after 6 years. But my seat is horrible, horrible! I could lengthen the stirrups one whole last time, so I am getting there slowly but surely, just like the O master.

Quote:

Yes, you are so right. It is the first saddle ever he actually loves and I can’t be more thrilled for it is my dream saddle! Just the sight of this saddle each day makes me smile like an idiot! And I love the feel of it… so secure and yet all Owen is doing can be felt through it like through butter! :ieks:

Quote:
What do you think of it compared to the Barefoots?

There is no comparison. Well in my mind. I do like the barefoot type of saddles. They should probably be standard worldwide for general riding. But it is no comparison to the feeling of the Espaniola. Also O dislikes the barefoots but he choises them over any treed saddle though.

Quote:
Is it the short flap or the long flap model?

It is the short flap, I am a really tiny person… :alien:

Don’t ever be sorry asking me about this saddle…!

It makes a really "wow" inspiring trick too when you get people to name left or right for you and your horse does it with seemingly no cue!
xxSue

That is a great idea!!! Thanks! I do use my inside leg to ask for just a little lateral flexion for later when we can leave the cavesson out completely. But that is an excellent idea Sue! Please show a vid :)

Great! trust me, I overlooked that a lot with O and boy does it present one with problems later on in everything.

Question though...
With flexions what do you do in the case of having a horse like Diego who can't even reach up that far to take a treat from me while mounted? He also tilts his head alot, like Karen mentioned on my videos (uneven ears). I notice even while bending around Owen keeps his ears nice and level.

Well, this did not come over night, believe me. In the 6 years O and could do very little else, this was one of the things we did a lot. So if you can not do it mounted, you have to work on it on the ground, preferable daily.
Also, there could be problems in the hip and or jaw area.
How does he do his ramener?
And can he bring forward his hips on both sides?
These exercises are sort of combined with the flexions.

Thank you Karen :) All these years of only being able to do standing exercises most of the time, when O had no breath paid of with this at least :)
He could not bend to save his life when he came to us in 2003.

Nice to see videos of Owen again :).

I've started doing this with Bear, he finally steps forward with his back legs on the flat (he was great at doing it on the pedastal). Now I'm just rewarding him for not stepping back when I ask him to lean a little. I think he almost gets it and he sure loves getting carrots for standing still and looking pretty :D.

I think there are probably problems with both his hip and jaw areas. The chiropractor says his left side of his pelvis is higher than the right (lumbar injury sustained some 8 years ago). So bending around to his left is easier... but the right is much harder.

His ramener depends, sometimes I can get him to do it without tilting his head at all, but many times he wants to tilt his nose sideways toward me as he's doing it. Trying to keep him from doing that by not asking for as much flex right now... I'm trying to help him recover but sometimes I feel like I don't know how.

Do not lunge then now. Do not ride circles but rectangular voltes. Work in yielding along the fence. (Head to the fence, outside leg taking quarters in). When that works, work on shoulder in. After that, when in shoulder in put your leg back and change to travers (Haunches in). Contstantly keep changing lead.
Only go to trot from shoulder in, only go to canter from travers or renvers.

Take aaaaall the time it needs.

6 months at least... but you will see improvement within months.
Now... I should see how you use your reins and seat to help any further.

Also, the works of Anja Beran, Philip Karl and Bent Branderup might shed some light :)

Josepha, as a training tool, the little videos are perfect. One concept at a time. I like that format very much.

I completely understand, it looks very well on Owen, and the riding must be wonderful!
But even looking at one is great, one day... I'll have my own (horse and) saddle like that :funny:

Is it ok if he chooses to do circles at liberty? Or should I discourage him from too many? I've never ridden a rectangular volte (by the way what is the difference between a volte and a circle in general training terms?), do I just make a turn at each corner?

He likes travers alot right now, but remains rigid (no bend) while doing it, is there anything I can do to suggest bend, or does he not need it?

Funny that you mention canter from travers... years ago in our training we had a "problem" where Diego constantly wanted to point his haunches inward while cantering or striking off for the canter. I guess he had some weaknesses we didn't understand.

Hopefully at some point I can get video of me riding  I just don't have any currently. What we do really varies from day to day... most of the time right now I do not use contact on the bridle at all because I want him to balance properly.

I'm not familiar with Anja or Phillip's work but I know and love to watch Bent Branderup videos. :D Does he have any DVD or book in English? I seem to remember that was a problem previously when I found his works.

What do you all think of Owen's idea about the stretch and then taking it up into backing in ramener?

Another great example that horses are not lazy at all, like some people still think. They are clever to know what´s good for them and then they work out to get better .

Indeed, Bent work is only in German, because of that darn publisher of his.

But I shall hopefully very soon have a video of you about bend in the travers if O keeps up like that :)

Wow, Romy! so wonderful of you to do this for me! It was also so nice to overview this topic!!!

So you want me to edit the newer ones in as well? Until now I have only done it with about a year's delay because I wasn't sure if you wanted to have the newer videos as single threads.

Edit: Okay, now they are all in one topic. Sorry, I am a bit impatient today, perhaps because I am so happy the forum is back. :)

Here is some other work of Owen, socializing horses that have problems with Equine Language and culture.

It consists of 4 videos of Owen working with Joya (a mare that has been in training with me for 5 weeks)

Thank you Romy! And I've added some more.

When you see the videos of last November, I think we can all agree O has never looked better, right? Look at his lean muscles that just keep building! And we did not do any work at all since late November!

O working on Ramener:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2uqUJqx ... ature=plcp

Normally as the frost would lift O would collaps into breathing problems again... but he did not... not on cough whatsoever... Which is strange as everybody advices to keep horses with resporatory problems outside 24/7 and he is just far better, better than years after I decided to follow my gut and stable him at night again...
I wrote an article on that as well for who is interested in my stable management:
