Its moving into summer here at the moment and the temperatures are starting to rise. Pops, BJ and Marlee don't have a lot of mane so they aren't to bothered by the heat but Bear gets quite hot. He is quite a dark brown anyway and his mane has grown so much this year and it is long and black and thick.

I was thinking of tying it up somehow or putting it into plaits so he can still get rid of the flies but it doesn't keep his neck so warm... I'm a bit worried though that he will get itchy and then rub all his mane out :ieks: .

Has anyone else tried this sort of thing and has it worked?

plaiting loosely mostly keeps the maines long and tidy and the neck cool :)

i never do such a thing with my pony's and they have long and thick manes. I dont think they have problems with it.
It is better to offer your horse some shadow. They prefer that more ;)

I gave it a go and he hasn't destroyed his mane yet so i think he'll be ok :) (touch wood).

He does seem happier - he gets quite sweaty underneath when the temperatures go over 35degrees.
