My horses take the turmeric provided it is mixed with some other food.
I also use beet pulp for this, and add 1 tablespoon of turmeric in there, together with some other nutrients (Verm-X sometimes, kelp, linseed).
It should not be too strong taste alltogether, so depending on how much of the products you put in, your basis should be increased a bit also.
Usually the finish it all, sometimes lick it out (more in winter), sometimes just finish it quickly and leaving in some leftovers when some nice hay or grass is lurking ;)

Lots of science news from around the world, constantly updated.
Turmeric can combat malaria, cancer virus and HIV
T. V. Padma

11 March 2005 | EN

Turmeric rhizomes

California Department of Food and Agriculture
[NEW DELHI] Indian researchers are saying that turmeric, a yellow spice used in many national dishes, has shown potential as a weapon against malaria as well as promising effects against HIV and the virus that triggers cervical cancer.

The latest findings are of significance to developing countries where malaria and HIV are serious public health concerns, and which bear 80 per cent of the global burden of cervical cancer. India alone has one-third of the world's cervical cancer cases.

Earlier studies had confirmed the anti-microbial, anti-tumour and anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric's main component, curcumin.

Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore and the University of Michigan Medical School, United States, showed that curcumin inhibits drug-resistant forms of Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite that causes cerebral malaria.

When they fed curcumin to mice infected with Plasmodium bergheii, a related parasite that causes rodent malaria, the number of parasites in the mice's blood fell by 80 to 90 per cent.

In tests, curcumin completely protected up to 29 per cent of infected mice, say the scientists.

"Curcumin may offer a novel treatment for malarial infection," says Govindrajan Padmanabhan, scientist emeritus at IISc and one of the authors of the research, which was published in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications in January.

In a separate study, Bhupesh Prusty and Bhudev Das of the Institute of Cytology and Preventive Oncology in New Delhi reported that curcumin could help prevent cervical cancer, which is associated with the human papilloma virus (HPV) in 90 per cent of the cases.

The virus has two key genes — E6 and E7 — which bind to a protein in normal human cells to make them (the cells) cancerous. Curcumin binds with the same human protein, preventing the virus from doing so, say the researchers in the January 2005 issue of International Journal of Cancer.

In laboratory studies, two hours after the scientists introduced curcumin to infected cells, the viral genes began to unbind from the human protein.

Das told SciDev.Net that his institute was planning to start human trials in two or three months. A capsule containing curcumin will be inserted into the vagina of women infected with HPV daily for three to four weeks.

The capsule dissolves slowly, releasing the curcumin powder, which will eventually be expelled in the urine.

In a further demonstration of turmeric's potential to help tackle killer diseases, when scientists at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore 'fed' curcumin to HIV-infected cells in the laboratory, the virus stopped replicating.

They say curcumin could be used to help formulate a combination of drugs to treat HIV infection.

Tapas Kundu, associate professor at the centre, told SciDev.Net that curcumin stops an enzyme called p300 from performing its normal role of controlling the activity of human genes. Because HIV integrates itself into human genetic material, when p300 stops working, the virus can no longer multiply.

Kundu believes the same mechanism could explain curcumin's other anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.

The p300 enzyme belongs to a class called histone acetylase transferase (HAT) enzymes, which scientists hope could lead them to treatments for a variety of cancers, asthma and neurological disorders.

The findings were reported in the December 2004 issue of Journal of Biological Chemistry.

If curcumin is p300 specific inhibitor then why not use this for treating H1N1 virus (Swine Flu) instead of Tamiflu which is only a neuraminidase inhibitor. Curcumin also inhibits the expression of NFkB TNF which will also check the inflammation in the lungs and other tissues, the main cause of deaths with H1N1 virus.

Wild turmeric effective in filariasis vector control

Offers hope to controlling the mosquito's and midges that carry sweet-itch, opthalmia/moon blindness etc.

CHENNAI] Wild turmeric extract can offer a cheap, biological method to control the mosquito that spreads filariasis, a disease that threatens 1.3 billion people in tropical countries, according to Indian scientists.

Filariasis is a parasitic infectious tropical disease, caused by a worm that invades the human lymph system and, like malaria, is spread by blood-sucking mosquitoes. It results in thickening of skin and underlying tissues.

A team led by V. A. Vijayan, professor at the department of zoology at University of Mysore, isolated two substances from Curcuma aromatica — a wild variety of turmeric grown in several Indian states for its medicinal value — that were toxic to mosquito larvae.

"A teaspoon of C. aromatica powder in stored water — a flower vase, small water tank, even drinking water pot — prevents mosquitoes from breeding for over a month. As turmeric is locally available people can use it easily," Vijayan told SciDev.Net.

Vijayan's team used petroleum ether to isolate the compounds. "Our costs were low because we dissolved the turmeric powder in a small amount of acetone and then made the test solution in water. For every 100 grams of C. aromatica powder, nearly 12 grams of [wild turmeric] extract was obtained," said Vijayan.

The only way to reduce the incidence of filariasis is to control the vector, say the scientists, pointing out that there is no vaccine against the disease which, if left untreated, develops into elephantiasis, a crippling and chronic condition.

Vijayan and his team highlighted the fact that mosquitoes rapidly develop resistance to synthetic insecticides. "Many of the currently available synthetic insecticides share more or less similar modes of action, which makes mosquitoes attain resistance and cross-resistance," they say.

"Because of its significant larvicidal [ability to kill mosquito larvae] properties and local availability, it might form a new arsenal for vector management, especially in areas where mosquitoes have developed resistance to conventional insecticides," they concluded.

In 2009, as many as 125 kinds of mosquitoes were reported to have developed immunity for different classes of insecticides and more than 500 species of arthropods may fall in this category, Vijayan said, citing entomological studies.

Currently available synthetic insecticides are also expensive and need to be applied with care to avoid irritation, allergic reactions and cancers.

There are no reports to date on vector resistance towards biocides. "Our attempt has been to find an effective, natural mosquito control agent which is highly economical and much safer," Vijayan's team reported.

The findings are published in January 2010 issue of Acta Tropica.

My Rio (dog), with his bladder cancer is doing very, VERY well after I drastically increased his daily intake of curcumin. I'm using a standardized capsule rather than just turmeric. It is a Turmeric Rhizome extract (Curcuma longa bcm-95) and it's 750 mg per capsule. He gets two with breakfast and two with his supper.

I had previously been giving him 750 mg twice a day for some time and he was still having bad days. After a bout of peeing blood (it is expected with bladder cancer and the vet said it would be cyclical) my vet suggested I try doubling his curcumin dose...so I did. She is not a holisitc vet, but is open to holistic ideas. She takes Curcumin herself for arthritis and says it's done wonders for her.

After doubling Rio's dose of curcumin, he's had the most sustained stretch of feeling really good (and being active and goofy and naughty, just as he should be) that he's had since he was diagnosed. I believe we are on week three of NOT having a down day. A "down day" is a day where he displays difficulty urinating, urinating frequently in tiny amounts, having little control over when he has to pee (he will walk and stop, pee, then walk and stop and pee), or days when he is obviously depressed, moving slowly, laying in an uncomfortable position rather than flat out, etc. None of that in the last three weeks.

I also have him on a rather high dose of vit C (about 2000 mg twice a day) and vit D (3000 - 4000 iu per day). He also gets several other supplements, but these, to me, are the keys and the ones I play with in terms of altering dosages.

The "BCM-95" is supposed to be more "bio-available" than regular turmeric.

I do not hold any hope that his cancer will miraculously disappear. My entire goal since his diagnosis was to focus on his joy of living and the quality of his remaining life. We did not (and do not) have a prognosis for length of life after diagnosis because it's all very subjective and individual and I've seen it estimated at 6 weeks to two years. So there really isn't any way for me to know...so we just go by how Rio enjoys his life, plays with his toys, chases the squirrels, barks at the neighbor's driving by, etc. ;)

Thanks for the additional information Susie!

I'm looking into the action of the BCM-95 on the bioavailability of the Curcum. I found this:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2792534/

I'm now wondering if the "BCM-95" has had an effect on the bioavailability of other supplements he's getting and if it's also increasing the effects of the Peroxicam he's also on. I'm just sending an email to my vet to see if she has access to more information. On one page I stumbled across from 2006, it mentioned a study that was awaiting peer review titled "Bioavailability of BCM-95 in Dogs". Can't find if it was published or not. Would be interesting to read!

http://www.euromedicausa.com/media/46/p ... es-bcm-95/

But particularly, I'm interested to find out if it has an effect on other supplements being taken...particularly Vit C. That would be VERY interesting if it does.

And thank you Bine!!! I just know that with every good wish for my boy, his life is made longer and better. The power of positive thinking!

I use turmeric powder for me, and for my older jointy doggie I mix his powder in milk rather than water, or a little oil sometimes.
If people begin coughing or sneezing around me, or if I overdo things I up my dose to double or quadruple, never had side effects and I feel better for it, usually once daily suffices, or twice daily through damp, cold weather.

I will look for BCM-95 studies, this is the brand name for EuroPharma's curcumin for pets.
Vitamins and minerals, - 'C' and Zinc will be helpful if absorbed.
Your vet will probably be able to find the information and Rio has a balanced diet so vet might suggest not adding further minerals or vitamins because some can be toxic in higher doses?
http://best-dog-vitamins.com/ suggests liquid vitamins for dogs are more readily absorbed.

Synergistic Effect With Other Herbs
Curcumin can provide a synergistic effect with other herbs, which means the herbs increase each other's beneficial effects. Bromelain, an extract of pineapple stems, is an herb that works well in this way with curcumin. Bromelain can decrease what is known as "circulating immune complexes," which can cause immune system damage. Combined with curcumin, the two increase each other's absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. In other words, by taking both curcumin and bromelain, the body will absorb more of both herbs than if they were taken alone.

Study must have been reviewed because...GREEN BAY, Wis.—EuroPharma was honored for the third year in a row with Better Nutrition magazine’s “Best of Supplements Award 2010" in the category of Pain & Inflammation for its natural pain reliever, Curamin®. Curamin, a Terry Naturally brand, is an all-natural supplement that enhances the body's natural defense mechanism for the relief of pain due to overuse. Marketed as safe and effective, it supports the body's healthy inflammation response to deliver natural pain relief without causing stomach irritation, side effects, or liver and kidney toxicity.

Curamin contains an all-natural, proprietary blend of ingredients, including: Curcumin extract BCM-95®, Boswellia extract BosPure®; DLPA (dl Phenylalanine) and Nattokinase. Curcumin is an herb cited by scientific studies to have strong pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties.

I have taken Boswellia tablets and tried Curcumin tablets but feel much better myself with the powder, not sure if I can find Boswellia not in tablet form.

Sending hugs to you and Rio, enjoy your new home and have a wonderful Christmas.xx

Thanks again Susie!!

I am currently giving Rio the CuraMed 750 - also from Terry Naturally (Europharma). I've sent them an email and someone wrote back that they do have some info for me, but the person who will write to me about it is away until Monday. It was really nice of them to respond so quickly.

I'll update with any info they give me.

Until I have a better understanding of how everything is working together at the moment (because it seems to all be working so well) I don't think I'll add anything to it.

I also have a holistic vet (not local...but I've talked to him on the phone) that I can contact if I need help at some point to rebalance things. I think at this point I would discuss with him first if I feel I should add any additional supplements.

Natural Remedy for Esophageal Cancer

Curry Kills Cancer Cells - -------it also boosts the immune system, relieves inflammatory conditions, detoxifies the body and prevents many viral and carcinogenic illnesses.

A curry a day keeps the doctor away? Not quite, but scientists have discovered that a chemical contained in the spice turmeric can kill of some cancer cells.

Cancer Treatment in the Spice Rack.

Esophageal (throat) cancer attacks the tube that carries food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach. The American Cancer Fund says, “It is the most rapidly increasing type of cancer in the United States.” Treatment for esophageal cancer includes the usual battery of remedies – surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation – but the survival rate is still very low. Only about five percent of people with esophageal cancer survive for five years.

Turmeric Contains Cancer-fighting Chemical

Researchers in Ireland and Poland have published a study in the British Journal of Cancer (October 6, 2009) that says a chemical found in turmeric kills the esophageal cancer cells.

In the study’s abstract, the authors say “Esophageal cancer incidence is increasing and survival rates remain extremely poor. Natural agents with potential for chemoprevention include the phytochemical curcumin (diferuloylmethane). We have examined the effects of curcumin on a panel of esophageal cancer cell lines.”

Curcumin is found in turmeric, the spice that gives curry its characteristic yellow colour. The chemical is also being tested as a treatment for arthritis and even dementia.

Causes of Esophageal Cancer

The usual culprits are to blame for the onset of esophageal cancer. According to the American Cancer Fund, “By far, tobacco and alcohol use are the strongest risk factors for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, accounting for more than 90 percent of such cases.”

The other form of esophageal cancer, adenocarcinoma, has more complex causes. However, obesity and gastroesophageal reflex, in which stomach acid backs up into the throat, are commonly associated with the disease.

CBC News reports (October 28, 2009) that, “Cancers of the esophagus kill more than 500,000 people across the world each year… It’s estimated there will be 1,600 new cases of the disease in Canada this year, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.”

Natural Remedy for Esophageal Cancer

Researcher Dr. Sharon McKenna and her team found that curcumin began killing cancer cells within 24 hours. And, reports BBC News (October 28, 2009), “The cells also began to digest themselves, after the curcumin triggered lethal cell death signals.

“Dr. McKenna said: 'Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value.’ ”

Recipe for Cancer Health

In the United Kingdom, a former chef has developed a recipe that makes the most of the cancer-fighting properties of curry.

Writing in The Telegraph (29 October, 2009), Andrew Hough reports that Gurpareet Bains has developed what he claims to be the world’s healthiest meal – a curry. “Each serving contains the nutritional equivalent of 49 helpings of spinach, 23 bunches of grapes, or nine portions of broccoli.

"Experts say it is up to 20 times more nutritious than any specially-formulated 'healthy' meal.”

Bains is quoted as saying, “…the curry I have created is brimming with health-beneficial ingredients that could, if eaten regularly, deal a devastating blow to many diseases.”

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Tumeric has been used for over 2500 years in India, where it was most likely first used as a dye.

The medicinal properties of this spice have been slowly revealing themselves over the centuries. Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions from cancer to Alzheimer's disease.

Here are 20 reasons to add turmeric to your diet:

1. It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.

2. When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer.

3. Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice.

4. May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.

5. Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.

6. Is a natural liver detoxifier.

7. May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.

8. May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.

9. It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.

10. Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.

11. Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.

12. May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management.

13. Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.

14. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

15. Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.

16. Promising studies are underway on the effects of turmeric on pancreatic cancer.

17. Studies are ongoing in the positive effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma.

18. Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.

19. Speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin.

20. May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Turmeric can be taken in powder or pill form. It is available in pill form in most health food stores, usually in 250-500mg capsules.

Once you start using turmeric on a regular basis, it's fun to find new ways to use it in recipes. My favorite way to use it is to add a pinch of it to egg salad. It adds a nice flavor and gives the egg salad a rich yellow hue.

Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Though turmeric is often used by pregnant women, it is important to consult with a doctor before doing so as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Curry spice kills throat cancer cells http://www.thefamilygp.com/curcumin-and-cancer.htm

Triggers cancer cell death

Curries may not be the healthiest of foods, but a chemical found in the curry spice tumeric can kill cancer cells, new research has found.

Past studies have shown curcumin, found in turmeric and the chemical that gives curry its mustard-yellow colour, may have anti-cancer properties.

Now scientists from the Cork Cancer Research Centre have found that it can kill oesophageal cancer cells in the laboratory.

Dr Sharon McKenna, who led the study, said: “Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value."

They found that curcumin started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours. The cancer cells also began to digest themselves.

Additionally, the results, published in this month's British Journal of Cancer, showed that curcumin kills cells by triggering lethal cell death signals.

“These exciting results suggest scientists could develop curcumin as a potential anti-cancer drug to treat oesophageal cancer," Dr McKenna said.

Each year around 7,800 people are diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in the UK. It is the sixth most common cause of cancer death and accounts for around five per cent of all UK deaths due to cancer.

Dr Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, said: “This is interesting research which opens up the possibility that natural chemicals found in tumeric could be developed into new treatments for oesophageal cancer.

“Rates of oesophageal cancer rates have gone up by more than a half since the 70s and this is thought to be linked to rising rates of obesity, alcohol intake and reflux disease so finding ways to prevent this disease is important too.”

This article was published on Wed 28 October 2009-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------http://voices.yahoo.com/turmeric-spice-kills-throat-cancer-cells-4774222.html amongst a host of other things it cures. Turmeric daily will help prevent suffering these horrid diseases. Prevention is better than relying on low success rate western cures.

Turmeric Spice Kills Throat Cancer Cells

J.C. Grant, Yahoo! Contributor Network

On Tuesday, the British Journal of Cancer published a propitious study from Cork Cancer Research Centre ("CCRC") at the University College Cork in Ireland that found that curcumin-a compound in the curry spice turmeric-begins killing esophageal cancer cells within 24 hours. According to the CCRC study, curcumin ostensibly acts as a free radical scavenger that triggers a lethal cell death signal that causes cancerous cells in the throat to digest and kill themselves.

CCRC states that currently less than 20 percent of people survive throat cancer beyond five years. But now, Dr. Sharon McKenna, the lead study author at CCRC says: "These exciting results suggest that scientists could develop curcumin as a potential anti-cancer drug to treat [throat] cancer." Dr. McKenna further explains: "Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value. Dr. Geraldine O'Sullivan-Coyne, a medical researcher in our lab had been looking for new ways of killing resistant [throat] cancer cells. She tested curcumin on resistant cells and found that they started to die using an unexpected system of cell messages." Professor Gerald O'Sullivan, Director of CCRC, adds: "The incidence of [throat] cancer has gone up by more than a half since the 70s, particularly in the Western world and this is thought to be linked to rising rates of obesity, alcohol intake and reflux disease, so finding ways to both treat and prevent this disease is extremely important."

For thousands of years, the turmeric spice has been used by Indian Ayurvedic medicine to treat various diseases and conditions of the liver, pulmonary and gastrointestinal systems along with more common ailments such as aches, pains, wounds, and sprains.

There are numerous clinical trials in humans which are currently pending that study the effect of turmeric's curcumin compound on diseases including multiple myeloma, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, psoriasis, and Alzheimer's disease.

In vitro and animal studies suggest that the curcumin found in turmeric has anti-tumor, antioxidant, anti-arthritic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Other studies suggest that curcumin may also be effective in treating malaria, preventing cervical cancer, and interfering with the replication of Herpes 1 and 2 and the HIV virus.

Research: Curcumin Is A Triple Negative Breast Cancer Killer

31st Ocotober 2012

A new study from Zheijian Provincial People’s Hospital in Zheijiang, China indicates that a compound in turmeric known as curcumin, which gives the spice its characteristic saffron-like color, is capable of inducing programmed cell death (apoptosis) within triple negative breast cancer cells. [1]

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), so named because the cells do not have the characteristic receptors for estrogen, progesterone and Her2/neu, is considered the most treatment resistant, primarily because these ‘missing receptors’ are required for many of the most popular conventional treatments to work, e.g. Tamoxifen targets estrogen receptors. For this reason, TNBC is considered the most aggressive, the most likely to be treated with less-targeted (and therefore more toxic) forms of chemotherapy, and the soonest to return when treatment fails.

Approximately 15-25% of all breast cancer cases are triple negative. Unfortunately, however, the most visible non-profit foundation dedicated to bringing awareness to the condition, the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation, is focused almost exclusively on raising awareness and money for a future pharmaceutical “cure” – much in the same way as its partner, Susan G. Komen, and the larger breast cancer awareness organization, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, act as if removing and addressing the obvious causes of cancer, e.g. carcinogenic chemical and radiation exposures, were not the first priority. For those suffering through or recovering from treatment right now, or trying to decide what to do with a new diagnosis, this latest Chinese study is promising.

Detractors, of course, point out that this latest curcumin research occurred on the level of a cell study, which in the pyramidal power structure of “evidence-based medicine,” where the randomized, th October double-blind and placebo-controlled human clinical study is the sole determinant of the ultimate truth, is the most insignificant, and least compelling as far informing treatment decisions. This view, however, is rather naive, insofar the criteria for determining a substance’s potential for future use as an FDA drug is not its effectiveness, safety or availability to those in need, rather, how proprietary and profitable the formula is to manufacture, distribute and market to consumers. The “gold standard” of evidence-based medicine therefore becomes literally: “those who own the gold make the standard.”

This is not the first study to reveal curcumin’s potential value in treating breast cancer. A growing body of experimental evidence clearly shows that curcumin provides a potential drug alternative. GreenMedInfo.com has indexed over 60 in vitro and animal studies demonstrating either curcumin’s direct anti-breast cancer activity, or, its ability to enhance breast cancer’s sensitivity to conventional chemotherapy. Also, the open access project has indexed over 1500 abstracts from the National Library of Medicine on its potential value in over 500 health conditions: Turmeric Breast Cancer.

Other pre-clinically confirmed natural candidates for combating triple negative breast cancer include:

Blueberry
Bee Propolis
