Cancer Treatment in the Spice Rack.
Esophageal (throat) cancer attacks the tube that carries food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach. The American Cancer Fund says, “It is the most rapidly increasing type of cancer in the United States.” Treatment for esophageal cancer includes the usual battery of remedies – surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation – but the survival rate is still very low. Only about five percent of people with esophageal cancer survive for five years.
Turmeric Contains Cancer-fighting Chemical
Researchers in Ireland and Poland have published a study in the British Journal of Cancer (October 6, 2009) that says a chemical found in turmeric kills the esophageal cancer cells.
In the study’s abstract, the authors say “Esophageal cancer incidence is increasing and survival rates remain extremely poor. Natural agents with potential for chemoprevention include the phytochemical curcumin (diferuloylmethane). We have examined the effects of curcumin on a panel of esophageal cancer cell lines.”
Curcumin is found in turmeric, the spice that gives curry its characteristic yellow colour. The chemical is also being tested as a treatment for arthritis and even dementia.
Causes of Esophageal Cancer
The usual culprits are to blame for the onset of esophageal cancer. According to the American Cancer Fund, “By far, tobacco and alcohol use are the strongest risk factors for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, accounting for more than 90 percent of such cases.”
The other form of esophageal cancer, adenocarcinoma, has more complex causes. However, obesity and gastroesophageal reflex, in which stomach acid backs up into the throat, are commonly associated with the disease.
CBC News reports (October 28, 2009) that, “Cancers of the esophagus kill more than 500,000 people across the world each year… It’s estimated there will be 1,600 new cases of the disease in Canada this year, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.”
Natural Remedy for Esophageal Cancer
Researcher Dr. Sharon McKenna and her team found that curcumin began killing cancer cells within 24 hours. And, reports BBC News (October 28, 2009), “The cells also began to digest themselves, after the curcumin triggered lethal cell death signals.
“Dr. McKenna said: 'Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value.’ ”
Recipe for Cancer Health
In the United Kingdom, a former chef has developed a recipe that makes the most of the cancer-fighting properties of curry.
Writing in The Telegraph (29 October, 2009), Andrew Hough reports that Gurpareet Bains has developed what he claims to be the world’s healthiest meal – a curry. “Each serving contains the nutritional equivalent of 49 helpings of spinach, 23 bunches of grapes, or nine portions of broccoli.
"Experts say it is up to 20 times more nutritious than any specially-formulated 'healthy' meal.”
Bains is quoted as saying, “…the curry I have created is brimming with health-beneficial ingredients that could, if eaten regularly, deal a devastating blow to many diseases.”

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Tumeric has been used for over 2500 years in India, where it was most likely first used as a dye.
The medicinal properties of this spice have been slowly revealing themselves over the centuries. Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions from cancer to Alzheimer's disease.
Here are 20 reasons to add turmeric to your diet:
1. It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.
2. When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer.
3. Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice.
4. May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.
5. Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.
6. Is a natural liver detoxifier.
7. May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.
8. May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.
9. It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.
10. Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.
11. Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.
12. May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management.
13. Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.
14. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
15. Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.
16. Promising studies are underway on the effects of turmeric on pancreatic cancer.
17. Studies are ongoing in the positive effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma.
18. Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.
19. Speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin.
20. May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.
Turmeric can be taken in powder or pill form. It is available in pill form in most health food stores, usually in 250-500mg capsules.
Once you start using turmeric on a regular basis, it's fun to find new ways to use it in recipes. My favorite way to use it is to add a pinch of it to egg salad. It adds a nice flavor and gives the egg salad a rich yellow hue.
Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Though turmeric is often used by pregnant women, it is important to consult with a doctor before doing so as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Curry spice kills throat cancer cells

Curries may not be the healthiest of foods, but a chemical found in the curry spice tumeric can kill cancer cells, new research has found.
Past studies have shown curcumin, found in turmeric and the chemical that gives curry its mustard-yellow colour, may have anti-cancer properties.
Now scientists from the Cork Cancer Research Centre have found that it can kill oesophageal cancer cells in the laboratory.
Dr Sharon McKenna, who led the study, said: “Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value."
They found that curcumin started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours. The cancer cells also began to digest themselves.
Additionally, the results, published in this month's British Journal of Cancer, showed that curcumin kills cells by triggering lethal cell death signals.
“These exciting results suggest scientists could develop curcumin as a potential anti-cancer drug to treat oesophageal cancer," Dr McKenna said.
Each year around 7,800 people are diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in the UK. It is the sixth most common cause of cancer death and accounts for around five per cent of all UK deaths due to cancer.
Dr Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, said: “This is interesting research which opens up the possibility that natural chemicals found in tumeric could be developed into new treatments for oesophageal cancer.
“Rates of oesophageal cancer rates have gone up by more than a half since the 70s and this is thought to be linked to rising rates of obesity, alcohol intake and reflux disease so finding ways to prevent this disease is important too.”

On Tuesday, the British Journal of Cancer published a propitious study from Cork Cancer Research Centre ("CCRC") at the University College Cork in Ireland that found that curcumin-a compound in the curry spice turmeric-begins killing esophageal cancer cells within 24 hours. According to the CCRC study, curcumin ostensibly acts as a free radical scavenger that triggers a lethal cell death signal that causes cancerous cells in the throat to digest and kill themselves.
CCRC states that currently less than 20 percent of people survive throat cancer beyond five years. But now, Dr. Sharon McKenna, the lead study author at CCRC says: "These exciting results suggest that scientists could develop curcumin as a potential anti-cancer drug to treat [throat] cancer." Dr. McKenna further explains: "Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value. Dr. Geraldine O'Sullivan-Coyne, a medical researcher in our lab had been looking for new ways of killing resistant [throat] cancer cells. She tested curcumin on resistant cells and found that they started to die using an unexpected system of cell messages." Professor Gerald O'Sullivan, Director of CCRC, adds: "The incidence of [throat] cancer has gone up by more than a half since the 70s, particularly in the Western world and this is thought to be linked to rising rates of obesity, alcohol intake and reflux disease, so finding ways to both treat and prevent this disease is extremely important."
For thousands of years, the turmeric spice has been used by Indian Ayurvedic medicine to treat various diseases and conditions of the liver, pulmonary and gastrointestinal systems along with more common ailments such as aches, pains, wounds, and sprains.
There are numerous clinical trials in humans which are currently pending that study the effect of turmeric's curcumin compound on diseases including multiple myeloma, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, psoriasis, and Alzheimer's disease.
In vitro and animal studies suggest that the curcumin found in turmeric has anti-tumor, antioxidant, anti-arthritic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Other studies suggest that curcumin may also be effective in treating malaria, preventing cervical cancer, and interfering with the replication of Herpes 1 and 2 and the HIV virus.
