Unfortunately only in german a link to a facebook page about the amazing effect by zebra stripes on horseflies. Here a bbc article in english. These information is new for me, but how I find very interesting (and funny...). It's worth a try, then it seems to work... :)

btw: Most people used either flour or alumina with water.

Actually,

One of my roommates (Yes I am back in Europe!) put the strpes on her dark brown horse.
It was green finger painting stuff for little kids that is non toxic.
According to her the flies stay off and her horse feels better :D
Not all the kinds of flies keep away, I'll ask her if she re-painted her horse and try to get some better information or you.
