Wow, so many interesting thoughts.  I already have too much to read and now I'll have to add a couple more things. Glen, I loved your description about the saddling incident. I've been reading Temple Grandin's book "Animals in Translation" and the quotes of research of different parts of the brain and the differences between animals and people. There is so much that is not known, yet.
Another question that came up on another forum:
How do you ask forgiveness from a horse?

If you truly experience remorse and truly seek forgiveness, then horses know.
But their is no wrong in asking them the way you'd ask a human.

All you say that comes from your heart, animals understand completely.

I feel the same and my horses' reaction also suggests that it all depends on intent. For example when I hit them with the stick of the manure fork accidentally, like when I am watering the hay and suddenly a horse moves into the space where I was just moving the stick, they first get a fright and have a puzzled look on their faces, but when I then tell them that I am so sorry, which also unintentionally and automatically shows in my body language (sort of crunching or bowing down), they are calm at once. I also give them a hand of oat everytime I accidentally hurt or frightened them, which they happily accept as a small gesture of apology.

Yes, I like what both of you said, Josepha I also think that horses understand our intent, it might be more for me to put it in words because that way I'm much more conscious of my intent and it probably is easier to read in my body language and tone of voice. And Romy, I guess I try to fix just about every problem with food or touch, because that's what I would like :funny:

Well there you go: treat others the way you want to be treated yourself :funny:

(ps: if you want to get on the better side of me... good food is the way to go... :green: )
